Siobhan Chan, senior features editor at The Pharmaceutical Journal, has been awarded ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the Avicenna Media Awards 2026, held at Ironmongers’ Hall in London on 30 January 2026.

The judging panel said that Chan — who joined The Pharmaceutical Journal’s news and views team in July 2025 — had “no settling in period” and was “thrown straight into the deep end”.

“Within six months of joining, [Chan] produced high-impact investigative work,” the judges said, highlighting her work on the impact of staff shortages on patient safety and safety of prescribing weight loss injections.

The panel also noted her “strong engagement with grassroots pharmacists”, which is followed up with research.

This is the fourth year in a row that a journalist from The Pharmaceutical Journal has won at the Avicenna awards.

Investigations editor Sophie Willis won the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the 2025 awards.

In addition, senior features editor Dawn Connelly was awarded ‘Pharmacy Writer of the Year’ in 2024, while Carolyn Wickware, executive editor for news and views, won the same award in 2023.
