Luc Besançon, chief executive of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), has tendered his resignation.

In his resignation letter, dated 4 May 2017, Besançon announced that he will leave FIP on 1 November 2017, adding that “the time has come for me to consider the next steps in my professional development”.

Besançon joined FIP more than nine years ago, originally as a project coordinator. He later held the role of manager for scientific and professional affairs before taking up his post as general secretary and chief executive officer on 1 August 2013. Before joining the organisation, he completed a doctorate in pharmacy at the Université de Bourgogne, specialising in industrial pharmacy.

In his letter, Besançon writes: “I remain, at heart, a pharmacist, and I thank you all for the incredible occasions to advance pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences.”

Carmen Peña, president of FIP, thanked Besançon for his “continued commitment to FIP and his contributions to the advancement of our federation as project coordinator and, later, chief executive over the past four years”.

Peña offered her assurance that the process of recruitment for a new chief executive was underway, and that there would be “minimal disruption” to FIP activities.
