A pharmacotherapy service is to be developed in Scotland after the country’s first GP contract was strongly backed by family doctors.
The British Medical Association Scottish GPs committee confirmed the move after more than seven out of ten polled GPs voted in favour of the new contract.
The contract is intended to put the GP as an expert medical generalist at the centre of an expanded primary care team, which will including the new pharmacotherapy service, from April 2018.It will also see the continuation of the GP Pharmacy Fund. The pharmacotherapy service is set to include medication reviews, polypharmacy reviews, and specialist clinics such as for chronic pain.
Community Pharmacy Scotland head of policy and development, Amanda Rae, said: “It is encouraging that the direction of travel in Scotland is consistent. GPs are crucial partners but their skills and expertise must be best utilised along with the skills and professional expertise of others – such as community pharmacists.”
