Jonathan Burton elected as chair of Scottish Pharmacy Board

Jonathan Burton has been elected as chair of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS’s) Scottish Pharmacy Board (SPB). He was selected for the role on 2 July 2019; the first day of the Board’s two-day summer meeting. He takes over from John McAnaw, who stepped down from the role at this meeting.

Burton, a community pharmacist, has been a member of the SPB since 2012. He held the post of vice chair between 2015 and 2016, and again between 2017 and July 2019. In June 2018, he received a MBE for services to healthcare.

“It is an honour to be able to serve as chair of the [SPB]”, Burton said.

“The RPS undoubtedly does a huge amount of valuable work in promoting the profession of pharmacy and supporting pharmacists, but I recognise that many challenges still lie ahead in terms of how we deliver what our members need and want, and also how we communicate what we’re about to members and non-members alike.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on the [SPB] and the wider RPS team to make sure the Society is doing its very best for our members and the profession.”

At the same meeting, Ewan Black was elected as vice chair of the SPB.

Black, a, community pharmacist, has been a Board member since 2007. He was also affirmed as RPS Scotland’s second Assembly representative, and will sit alongside Burton who, as chair, automatically takes up an Assembly seat.
