Pharmacy needs to be at the forefront of shaping digital health — but how do we get there?

In my second letter for the English Pharmacy Board campaign, I want to share my vision for how we can harness the power of technology to enhance pharmacy practice, support our profession and shape the future of digital health.

We are in the digital revolution and much like the industrial revolution it impacts many touch points in our lives, not just our roles within pharmacy teams. Technology has the potential to revolutionise the way we deliver care, streamline our operations, and elevate the roles of pharmacy teams within our healthcare systems. As a candidate for the English Pharmacy Board with an underpinning postgraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence, I am dedicated to championing initiatives that integrate cutting-edge technology into pharmacy practice, in addition to supporting our workforce to confidently utilise various technologies in their day-to-day practice.

I will advocate for the adoption of digital tools and platforms to streamline pharmacy workflows and improve efficiency. By embracing digital transformation, we can optimise and evolve our roles as pharmacy professionals, for example within medication management processes and operational processes.

Additionally, as technology continues to play an increasingly prominent role in healthcare, it is essential that pharmacists and healthcare professionals possess the necessary digital literacy skills to effectively leverage and utlise these tools. I will advocate for the development of training programs and resources to enhance digital literacy among pharmacy teams, ensuring that we are well-equipped to understand and harness the full potential of technology.

Beyond the confines of the pharmacy, I am committed to promoting the role of pharmacists within the wider healthcare system. Remote and non-remote roles have become a mainstay of some of our sectors and therefore new and old roles are evolving to accommodate differentiation in working environments. By collaborating with healthcare stakeholders and leveraging digital health platforms, we can demonstrate the value of pharmacy within these platforms and across the wider healthcare system. Pharmacy must be present within these conversations to shape the future of digital health.

In conclusion, I believe that by embracing technology and leveraging its power to support the pharmacy profession. As a candidate for EPB, I believe that we can drive positive change and innovation within our practice to make meaningful impact to our profession and patient care through utilising technology and shaping the future of digital health.
