Patient involvement in healthcare research, also known as ‘patient and public involvement’, offers several benefits and is increasingly being recognised as a transformative approach owing to its positive affect on outcomes and relevance.
In this episode of The PJ Pod, we look at the benefits of effective patient engagement, before speaking to the shortlist and joint winners of the 2025 ‘Outstanding Pharmacy Early-career Researcher Award’ (OPERA) to explore some of the ways that they are working with patients and the public to improve the relevance, accessibility and quality of their work.
By the end of the episode, you will be able to:
- Understand the value of patient and public involvement in research;
- Identify some of the varied ways patients can contribute to the research process;
- Understand the barriers to patient involvement and how to overcome them.
Many thanks to Qonita Anjani, Ryan Hamilton, Wallis Lau, Smita Salunke and Jennifer Stevenson the for their contributions.
This programme is presented by Alex Clabburn, senior editor, research and learning and was produced by Geoff Marsh.
