SecurMed, the not-for-profit organisation responsible for management of the UK Medicines Verification System (UK MVS), has engaged Arvato Systems to deliver the IT requirements of the medicines data repository.

Arvato Systems, who have also been chosen to deliver MVS IT systems for several other EU countries, including the Netherlands and Austria, said in a statement that: “Following a robust and competitive selection process, Arvato Systems is pleased to announce the entering into a letter of intent with SecurMed UK, the UK Medicines Verification Organisation, to implement the IT solution for the United Kingdom.”

Under the Falsified Medicines Directive, which comes fully into force across the European Union in February 2019, prescription medicines must be verified as authentic before being supplied to a patient. The UK MVS, which will be connected to the central European Medicines Verification System, will hold unique identification data from all authenticated medical packaging. Pharmacists will be required to scan each medical package at the point of dispensing and confirm that the medicine within has been registered with the UK MVS.

Arvato Systems were one of three companies identified as preferred providers for the UK MVS, alongside Aegate Holdings Limited and Solidsoft Reply.
