Benefits of Manchester trust merger outweigh risks, report shows

Central Manchester University Hospitals

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published a final report (online, 1 August 2017) on the impact of the proposed merger between Central Manchester University Hospitals and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trusts and found that it will give rise to substantial benefits for the care of patients.

The CMA report says that the benefits, which include reductions in patient mortality, clinical complications and infection rates, outweigh any harm caused by a loss of competition between the merging trusts.

Greater Manchester became the first English region to gain control of devolved health spending last year.
