Tribute

Bill was a former Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He studied pharmacy at Manchester University on the four-year honours bachelor of science course in pharmaceutical chemistry. This course was only offered to two exceptional students each year and involved a great deal of study on the university’s honours course in chemistry. Bill’s partner on this degree course was John Midgley, who remained a lifelong friend of Bill. Bill and John both graduated with first class honours in pharmacy and in chemistry.

Bill next studied for a master of science degree at Manchester University on research in pharmaceutical chemistry. He then moved on to London University’s School of Pharmacy to study for a PhD in chemistry. After finishing this, he successfully applied for a senior lecturer post at the Liverpool School of Pharmacy, later becoming head of the pharmaceutical chemistry section.

Bill was an excellent teacher who was well liked by students. He was later promoted to principal lecturer and deputy head of the school, and was given the title of professor by Liverpool John Moore’s University. Bill became head of the Liverpool School of Pharmacy in 1988 and took early retirement from this post in 1992.

Outside of pharmacy, Bill enjoyed walks in the Peak District and caving trips during his time in Manchester. During his time in Liverpool, he enjoyed regular walks with colleagues in the mountains of Snowdonia. He and his wife were also keen tennis players.

Bill will be sadly missed by many friends. Our thoughts are with his wife Eileen, daughter Alison and son Matthew, and his many grandchildren.

Brian Edwards, former colleague at both the Manchester and Liverpool schools of pharmacy and long-standing friend
