Clive Edwards BPharm PhD died, aged 82 years, on 18 July 2026, in North Durham University Hospital shortly after being admitted. He was known by pharmacy students as an author of the textbooks Major Illness or Minor Disease, which ran for three editions from 1982–2000 and Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, which ran for three editions from 1994–2003. In Newcastle upon Tyne, he was active across the profession in academia, in hospital and in community practice.
Clive graduated from the School of Pharmacy, University of London in 1966 and obtained a PhD in pharmacology at the University of Sheffield in 1973. His initial experience was in the pharmaceutical industry, with pre-registration training at Parke Davis, technical translation with Sandoz in Basle, Switzerland, and clinical research at Sterling Winthrop. He worked as a community pharmacy manager in Doncaster, Yorkshire, and as a staff pharmacist at St Luke’s Hospital in Guildford, Surrey.
His academic work was as a lecturer in clinical pharmacy at Aston University, and in 1986, he moved to become senior lecturer in clinical pharmacy at the Wolfson Unit at Newcastle University, led by professor Michael Rawlins, and honorary clinical pharmacist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. With new developments in the NHS, he became prescribing advisor to several primary care groups and GP practices in the North of Tyne area.
Clive was married to Joy, an exuberant, outgoing teacher and harmonious foil to his more reserved personality and gentle sense of humor. They were well known in their community of Ponteland, Northumberland. In recent years, he suffered from slowly developing Parkinson’s disease. Joy pre-deceased Clive in 2014, and they are survived by son Duncan and daughter Nicky.
