General Pharmaceutical Council
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is asking for views on proposed guidance for pharmacist prescribers to make sure they provide safe and effective care when prescribing.
The pharmacy regulator’s draft guidance covers nine areas including: taking responsibility for prescribing safely; keeping up to date and prescribing within the pharmacist prescribers’ level of competence; working in partnership with other healthcare professionals and people seeking care; and prescribing in certain circumstances.
It also looks at prescribing non-surgical cosmetic medicinal products; remote prescribing; safeguards for the remote prescribing of certain medicines; and raising concerns.
Duncan Rudkin, chief executive of the GPhC, said: “As pharmacist independent prescribing roles are further developed in the health and social care system, we want to hear from the sector about our proposed guidance to make sure pharmacist prescribers understand what is expected of them when prescribing and provide safe and effective care.”
He added: “We welcome responses from anyone with an interest in pharmacist prescribing. We are particularly interested to hear views about the impact of our proposals on patients and the public, pharmacist prescribers, pharmacy professionals, pharmacy owners and employers.”
The GPhC considered recent reports, including the Gosport Panel Report into deaths at Gosport War Memorial Hospital, which was published in June 2018, when producing its draft guidance.
