Tribute

It is with deep sadness that I write about the passing of my colleague and friend, Hillary Judd, whom I had the privilege to work alongside for the past seven years.

After graduating from Aston University in 1977, Hillary had a varied, distinguished and successful career within the scientific and pharmacy professions, ranging from scientific roles with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and 17 years with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, as well as being rapidly promoted to principal pharmaceutical officer at the British Pharmacopoeia. Her attention to detail, encyclopaedic knowledge and ability to debate with humour and intelligence made her an engaging and respected colleague wherever she worked.

Hillary relocated from London to Exeter and joined First Databank Europe, working on the Multilex database and leading a team of 20 pharmacists and clinical researchers. She maintained the high standards required for the clinical decision support data and also advised on professional, political and commercial implications for the organisation.

It was in 2015 that I had the pleasure of interviewing and employing Hillary at Rx-info. She rapidly became a key, supportive and trusted colleague, encouraging a young business towards achieving its aspirations. Again, Hillary’s knowledge, experience and wit played a huge part in developing our team.

Outside of her pharmacy persona, Hillary enjoyed playing double bass and was a regular musician in the Exeter Symphony Orchestra. She volunteered for some years with the National Trust at Killerton House with her husband Gavin, and also shared her enjoyment of knowledge with younger generations, passing on her copies of New Scientist — in which she had many letters published — to aspiring students.

We are truly grateful for Hillary’s wisdom, professionalism and friendship, and we will miss her greatly.

I am saddened and shocked to read of Hillary Judd's death. I am fortunate that I interviewed with Hillary for an interesting pharmacist information job role in Exeter, Devon. Although unsuccessful, Hillary agreed to keep in touch via LinkedIn. And we chuckled about our shared connection as Pharmacy graduates of Aston University in Birmingham. I think Hillary would be delighted with the transformation of the Gosta Green campus! So, my heartfelt condolences to Hillary's family, friends & colleagues.
