Patient stories form part of magazine competition that aims to raise the profile of pharmacists.

Five pharmacists have been selected as finalists in a nationwide “I love my pharmacist” competition, being held by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in collaboration with IPC Media and Woman’s Weekly magazine.

The five finalists are David Sharp, Sid Dajani, Giovanna Di Tano, Shaheen Bhatia and Reena Baral.

The RPS and Woman’s Weekly were looking for real-life, heart-warming accounts from pharmacists and their patients, asking questions such as “Have you gone the extra mile in helping a patient manage a life-long condition?” or “Have you assisted a parent concerned about their young child?”.

Stories from the five finalists and their patients will be featured on a page in Woman’s Weekly on 24 September 2014 and also online, where readers will be able to vote for their favourite. Reminders about the competition will appear in the magazine over the following month to encourage its readers to vote online.

David Sharp was nominated by John Collins, 61, from Doncaster, who has been a patient of his for 28 years, while Sid Dajani was nominated by Les and Sheila Sturgess, who have visited his pharmacy in Hampshire for 47 years.

Giovanna Di Tano was nominated by Isabella Simmons, 76, from Edinburgh, while Shaheen Bhatia was nominated by Irving Franks, 75, from Ilford. Finally, Reena Baral was nominated by Clare Blake, 77, from Sutton, who has used the same pharmacy for more than 30 years

Reena’s father owned it previously.

The readers’ choice will be announced in the 29 October 2014 issue of Woman’s Weekly, after which the winning  pharmacist will be awarded a plaque to show their community that they have been voted the winner of “I love my pharmacist”.
