Public Health England (PHE) has launched an opioid treatment quality improvement programme, and will work with drug treatment providers to develop tools to improve the quality of substitution treatment.
The new PHE programme is intended to help drug services implement the government’s new drug misuse and dependence guidelines and improve treatment for drug users.
In a statement, PHE said the new programme will aim to “support services to improve the quality of treatment so that people understand how their treatment works, comply with it and stick with it.
“This will include a focus on using psychosocial interventions to support changes in behaviour.”
The programme will focus specifically on developing resources for services who are treating people who continue to use drugs (particularly heroin).
And PHE said the programme will also try to “enhance wider recovery support for those in treatment by supporting services to help other aspects of their lives beyond drug use, such as employment, living arrangements, family relationships, trauma and abuse.”
