Gino Martini, professor of pharmaceutical innovation at King’s College London, has been appointed the new chief scientist of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). He will take up the role in early September 2017, replacing Jayne Lawrence, who left the position earlier this year.

“It’s a great honour and privilege to be appointed the chief scientist for the RPS, I think it’s the pinnacle of my professional practice,” said Martini.

“My main objective is to reinforce the role of pharmacists as medical scientists and experts [and ensure] that the general public know they can come to pharmacists to get the best advice.

“Science underpins pharmacy practice,” he added.

The announcement was made by Paul Bennett, chief executive of the RPS, at the RPS’s annual conference 2017 in Birmingham, where it was also announced that Claire Thompson will be taking on the role of RPS deputy chief scientist.

Martini, who is senior medical adviser at Shire Pharmaceuticals, acknowledged the “excellent” work of his colleagues Lawrence and Colin Cable, assistant chief scientist, with whom he has worked closely on the RPS Pharmaceutical Sciences Expert Advisory Panel over the past six years.

Martini has also been chairman of the Industrial Pharmacists Forum for the past year and has been a member of the RPS for around 15 years.
