The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has appointed Amira Guirguis as its new chief scientist.

Currently professor of pharmacy, deputy pro vice chancellor and the MPharm programme director at Swansea University, Guirguis also chairs the RPS science and research committee.

Announcing the appointment on 8 October 2025, the RPS confirmed that Guirguis will begin her role as chief scientist on a phased basis from 13 October 2025, while continuing her academic position at Swansea University.

She will replace Parastou Donyai, who was appointed as chief scientist in 2022.

“[Amira] is internationally recognised for her pioneering work in the detection of novel psychoactive substances and was the principal investigator for the UK’s first Home Office-licensed pharmacist-led drug checking service,” a statement from the RPS said.

“Drawing on her scientific expertise, she also provides independent advice to inform national drug policy and supports evidence-based approaches to harm reduction and public health.”

Guirguis said she was “honoured to take on the role of chief scientist”.

“Science is at the heart of pharmacy and I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the profession to ensure that scientific excellence continues to enhance patient care and public health,” she added.

Paul Bennett, chief executive of the RPS, said: “[Amira’s] appointment reflects our commitment to evidence-based science and innovation in pharmacy. [Her] expertise, leadership and passion for pharmaceutical science will be invaluable as we transition to become the Royal College of Pharmacy.”
