Research suggests that statins may modulate immune responses. Swiss researchers have discovered that statins suppress the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II, which is directly involved in T cell activation.
This indicates that statins are likely to have an immunosuppressive effect and could be used as immunosuppressors in organ transplantation and autoimmune diseases, they say (Nature Medicine 2000;6:1399).
