The pass rate for the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC) summer registration assessment has fallen to the lowest level for five years.
The results of the assessment, which was undertaken across the UK on 25 June 2024, were published on 30 July 2024 and showed a pass rate of 75%, down 2 percentage points from the 77% pass rate for the summer assessment held in 2023.
The pass rates in 2022, 2021 and 2019 were 80%, 82% and 72%, respectively. There was no summer assessment held in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 2,776 candidates sat the GPhC and Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland exam on 25 June 2024, 2,081 of whom achieved a pass and 695 a fail.
Among the GPhC candidates; 2,358 took the assessment for the first time (pass rate 77%), 208 sat the exam for a second time (pass rate 53%) and 112 took it for a third time (pass rate 59%).
Commenting on the results, Duncan Rudkin, chief executive of the GPhC, said: “The registration assessment is one of the ways we test trainee pharmacists to ensure they understand how to apply knowledge appropriately and in a timely way. This means they can make professional judgements when practising.
“For those who unfortunately didn’t pass the assessment, there are a range of options available, with all the relevant information on the registration assessment webpage on the June 2024 registration assessment page.
“The charity Pharmacist Support can also provide help with mental health and wellbeing as well as practical advice.”
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society posted its congratulations on X to successful candidates and offered support to those who did not pass the assessment.
