I was very saddened to read of the death of Robin Williams on 21 January 2021. We were contemporaries at Torquay Technical College and Plymouth Technical College.
As students Robin and I, together with a few others, often larked around. Robin was the tallest of us and he was self conscious of his height. One day, a group of us were walking along a pavement overhung with scaffolding about 25ft high, and Robin ducked his head. We were merciless with our laughter and would not let him forget it.
When I was living in Newton Abbot, Devon, I was invited to visit him and his family in Teignmouth. Later, he became my best man and we remained friends for many years after. However, although we both lived and worked in Plymouth, sadly we drifted apart.
He was a pleasant friend to have and had a great sense of humour.
