I am writing to bring attention to an important resource now available to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians: a dedicated peer support group for those recovering from addiction to alcohol and/or drugs.
Substance use disorders can affect anyone, including highly trained healthcare professionals. There are ’12 step’ groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous; however, pharmacists and technicians face unique pressures and access to substances that can increase vulnerability. Stigma and fear of the consequences often prevents those affected from seeking the help they need.
Recognising this, a pharmacist who had received assistance from Pharmacist Support to overcome his own addiction to drink and drugs set up a confidential peer support group for other pharmacists — the Pharmacy Professionals Recovery Group (PRRG). This group has been in existence for several years and has evolved from a quarterly telephone conference call to monthly meetings on Zoom.
Initially, the only route into this group was referral through Pharmacist Support, but has since become autonomous, with the agreement and support of Pharmacist Support. We are hoping to reach out to the wider pharmacy profession, including pharmacy technicians, as well as pharmacist and students.
The PPRG offers a safe, understanding environment where individuals can share experiences, offer encouragement and support each other’s recovery journeys, free from judgement.
By creating a professional community grounded in empathy and solidarity, we aim to help participants rebuild confidence, maintain their recovery and continue contributing their vital expertise to patient care.
I encourage any colleagues in need — or those who know someone who might benefit — to get in touch. Recovery is possible and no one needs to face it alone.
