The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has published an Essential Guide on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on 25 May 2018.

This EU-wide legislation, which replaces the existing data protection directive, offers individuals increased rights and protections over their personal data. The GDPR will apply to any organisation that processes or controls personal data — including community pharmacies, hospitals and GP practices — and organisations must actively demonstrate that they are complying with the legislation.

The Essential Guide explains what the GDPR is, what it means for pharmacists in practice, and signposts to resources available to help pharmacists implement the legislation requirements. The guide may be accessed at the RPS website: https://www.rpharms.com/resources/essential-guides/gdpr

GDPR will apply in the UK, regardless of Brexit.
