Free OTC medicines

8 June 2015: The Scotsman reported that patients in Scotland could get free over-the-counter medicines “as part of a dramatic step to ease the strain of GPs and hospitals”.

RPS director of Scotland Alex MacKinnon spoke to the paper and said: “GP services are in crisis. Doctors surgeries and A&E departments are burdened by patients with minor, self-limiting illnesses. This could free up GPs’ time and take the pressure off them.” He added that this move would make pharmacies the “first port of call” for those with “common clinical conditions”.
