Tribute

Malcolm Ernest Brown held degrees in natural and social science research. He worked as an industrial pharmacist making Calpol then moved to the British NHS, where he managed a team of hospital pharmacists. In later years, Malcolm worked as a community pharmacist, which fuelled his sociological observations. He was also a qualified person who signed off salmon pellets and BOC oxygen, among other things. Malcolm tutored many future pharmacists and trained the sales force of a major international company on selling medicines to the NHS.

He was the keynote speaker at an international multidisciplinary conference at the Hague, which was tasked with getting delegates to think outside of the box. Malcolm was also an award-winning writer, with over 180 publications, and wrote the popular ‘Bottled Brown’ column in the IP Journal. In addition, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for distinction in the profession of pharmacy and made lots of friends at the Society dinner.

I was very sorry to learn of Malcom’s passing
We had both worked in the hospital sector which was how we became acquainted
Although living in working in different parts of the country the Fellows dinner each year brought us together where we would compare notes on what we were doing and share views on the future of pharmacy
His quiet manner belied a lifetime of achievements
    I shall miss his company
