A Queen’s Counsel with a background in international law has been appointed chair of the regulatory committee that decides whether pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are fit to practise.
Michael Caplan took over as chair of the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC) fitness-to-practise committee on 20 December 2016. He replaces Michael Simon who has resigned following his appointment as a circuit judge.
Announcing Caplan’s appointment, Nigel Clarke, chair of the GPhC, says: “He brings a wealth of experience to the role and I very much look forward to working with him… I am sure Michael will make a vital contribution through chairing the committee.”
Until April 2016, Caplan was a senior partner at the international law firm Kingsley Napley where he worked for 30 years and where he is retained as a consultant.
Caplan chairs the Police Appeals Tribunal and the regulatory board of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales; he is also authorised to sit as a deputy judge in the High Court.
Caplan has been deputy chair of the GPhC’s fitness-to-practise committee since 2010.
