Roy Sinclair, who passed away last year, had spent a career as a hospital pharmacist and until shortly before his death, was still serving on local Ethics Committees. However I came to know him as a Liveryman of the Society of Apothecaries. Quiet and self effacing, Roy nevertheless was a great expert in historic medical texts including pharmacopoeias and herbals. As a volunteer in the Society of Apothecaries' Collections and Library, he greatly helped to update the database of the Society's valuable Rare Books, recommending restorations and providing much information. He was hugely knowledgeable and had a fine collection of rare books himself. His final work was a privately published and erudite study of William Withering and his much misunderstood work on digitalis.
Roy's knowledge will be much missed and our thoughts are with his family.
Nicholas Wood, Past Master and Curator Emeritus, Society of Apothecaries.
