Tribute: Michael John Hewitt (1936–2021)

We are sorry to announce the death of Michael John Hewitt.

After qualifying from Manchester University in 1958, Mike became a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 1959. He returned to his home town of Stoke-on-Trent but, in 1960, he was the last man called to national service in the city. For two years he used his pharmaceutical knowledge serving the RAF in Germany. On his return to England, he married Margaret and joined a community pharmacy, Duncan Ross Chemists in Weston Coyney, Stoke-on-Trent, where he spent more than 30 years providing advice, support and care to his local community. He then moved to Miltons Chemists LTD as a superintendent pharmacist, where he worked until retirement.

Following his qualification, Mike enjoyed 62 years of continuous membership with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to keep up to date with the latest innovations and news from the pharmaceutical world. In addition to pharmacy, Mike’s other life passion was the legendary Volkswagen Golf MK1. He delighted in tinkering with his cars and taking them to shows well into his retirement.

Mike passed away peacefully at home on 22 December 2021, aged 85 years. A service of thanksgiving for his life was held on 28 January 2022 at Stafford Crematorium. He leaves behind wife Margaret, children Susie and Matthew and granddaughter Sophie.
