The Pharmaceutical Journal has won ‘Editor of the Year’ and ‘Feature of the Year (specialist audience)’ at the 2024 Medical Journalists’ Association (MJA) awards, held at the News Building in central London on 11 September 2024.
Presenting the ‘Editor of the Year’ award to Dawn Connelly, senior features editor, the judges said that she “delicately balances the bread-and-butter topics of daily importance to readers’ lives with original, investigative reporting on subjects of wider public importance”.
They added that Connelly expertly edits “complex stories that have the potential to be dry into fascinating reads”.
Meanwhile, executive editor Carolyn Wickware was awarded ‘Feature of the Year (specialist audience)’ for her investigation into the inconsistent offering of compassionate use schemes by pharmaceutical companies.
In their comments, the judges said the article was “an excellent piece of investigative journalism requiring a hugely impressive amount of research, with the patient perspective making it a more emotive read”.
Journalists Deborah Cohen and Margaret McCartney were also shortlisted for ‘Feature of the Year (specialist audience)’ for their investigation, published by The Pharmaceutical Journal, into undue political influence on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to approve cholesterol-lowering drug inclisiran.
The MJA awards are held annually to celebrate excellence in health and medical journalism.
In June 2024, The Pharmaceutical Journal won the ‘Best Podcast’ award at the British Society of Magazine Editors awards.
